My Teaching Philosophy

I want to become a physical education teacher because I have a passion for the education of the body. Sports have always played a major role in my life and I never want that to change. I am excited about having the opportunity to work in a field I have a strong desire to be a part of. As a student, physical education was always the part of the day that I looked forward to. I see a huge need to keep physical education in schools. I believe that children need to be educated on being life-long learners of health education. If children become interested in physical education at a young age then I believe it is more likely to stay with them for life.
Physical education is a time when students can educate their mind through movement. Physical education is the one subject that teaches the importance of healthy eating and physical exercise. Studies have shown that kids who are physically active and fit are likely to have stronger academic performance. Physical activity improves cognitive and behavioral responses. Physical activity circulates blood and oxygen to the body delivering nutrients. Physical education is an integral part of the total education program of the student.
When I become a physical education teacher I hope I have the influence on my students that some of my physical education teachers had on me. I want my students to understand the benefits of physical activity and develop a passion for it in their life. I believe that physical education can do so much for a child. I want to develop the self-esteem of the child through physical activity. I hope my goals as a teacher will lead to the students wanting to be involved in sports and athletics. I believe my role as a physical education teacher goes beyond the classroom. In order to educate my students I believe I have to be a life long learner of health and exercise.
I have had several coaches in my life that I admire and have been an influence in my choice of becoming a physical education teacher. My cross-country coach was the most influential coach I have had. He would push me when I did not think I had anything left to give. I remember him whistling at me to go faster and pick it up. The sound of him whistling at me while I was running was like nails scratching a chalkboard. I use to wonder why he was telling me to do better when I am giving it my all? Now I look back and realize that he was trying to help me in becoming better, faster, and stronger. When he was not able to make a race we would miss him whistling at us to go faster. It is the dedication and time spent with the athlete that helps to make a good coach. When the athlete knows you care, they are going to try their best to show you that the hard work is paying off. I have learned a lot from my coaches on ways that I want to teach my class.
My perception of success is knowing that my students have left my class with a positive view towards physical education. We need good physical education teachers who care about their students and work towards meeting their best interests. Recognizing that all children have differences and come from different cultures is important. All children should be able to feel accepted in physical education. Every child has something that makes them special, and that something should be brought out in them. I believe that physical education plays a major role in the happiness of a child.
